Dr Andy Kinnear, a GP and head of Avon IM&T consortium, will discuss a pilot that gave community-based clinicians access to mobile devices.

'We began with a list of what the benefits would be and the list has now grown,' he said.

Jim Briggs, director of the Centre for Healthcare Modelling and Informatics at the University of Portsmouth, said IT could save GPs time: 'Being able to refer a patient to hospital on a mobile device is quick and convenient.'

Dr Justin Whatling, vice chairman of strategy and policy for health at the British Computer Society, will debate who will be responsible for the management of large-scale IT projects in the NHS after the Health Bill.

Smart Healthcare Live, sponsored by The Guardian, takes place on 14/15 June at the ExCeL in London.
