The free app, called the ‘clinical information xchange’ or ‘CiiX’, was developed by Northumbria healthcare foundation trust and has been downloaded 250 times to date.

The app contains direct contact details for clinicians across Northumbria and is helping to build stronger relationships between specialist doctors, nurses and local GPs, Northumbria foundation trust said.

Northumberland LMC secretary Dr Jane Lothian said: ‘The iPhone app really is a fantastic tool for North East GPs and means we can very quickly find the right specialists to talk to and, most importantly, have a direct dialogue to agree the most appropriate care for our patients.

‘Having the names and contact details for specialist consultants and up to date forms at the touch of a button makes the referral process much simpler.’

As well as contact details, the app provides GPs with local clinic descriptions including time and location, referral information and forms, service changes and patient information leaflets.
