'Make all ethnicity codes eligible'

The chairman of the GPC's IT subcommittee has demanded that all ethnicity Read codes available on practice IT systems become eligible for quality points.

The revised quality framework offers practices the point for recording the ethnicity of new patients. But guidance is yet to be published on how practices should record the information on their practice IT systems.

Three separate lists of different but overlapping ethnicity codes - 9i, 9T and 9S - are included in GP IT systems.

The 9i categories are the same as those used in the 2001 census. Similar but not identical categories appear on the 9S list while 9T includes ethnic groups not currently found in the UK.

GPC IT subcommittee chairman Dr Paul Cundy said a draft version of Read code guidance lists 9i as the codes to be used.

However, he said he would ask Connecting for Health for 9S and 9T to be added.
