Letters: Government won't value independent contractors

Your editorial said: 'Surely it is up to the government to lead if it values the concept of GPs as independent contractors.' (GP, 15 May).

Is it any surprise then that the government is definitely not leading on the issue, but denigrating GPs at every turn, because it has never been the government that valued independent contractor status?

The clear government policy for years has been to abolish the independent GP contractor by all means possible.

We cannot sit back and expect the government to fight for something it doesn't want.

Unfortunately, there is now too large a contingent of young doctors that has been misguidedly indoctrinated against the value of partners, and is calling vociferously for a salaried service - doing the government a favour at the expense of all doctors and patients alike.
