Letters: E-communication is easier than thought

I was glad to read about Dr Silver's experience of the benefits of electronic communication with patients in 'Making better use of email' (GP, 5 December).

Many of the reasons she gives for its usefulness are at the heart of our piloting of 'Communicator' in the spring.

However, Dr Silver is wrong to believe that Communicator's use depends on people being forced to have a Summary Care Record (SCR) - anyone can have a secure, Healthspace account without an SCR.

As its name makes clear, this is designed to be a summary and it would fail if it was cluttered with each everyday communication or other consultations we hold on a regular basis.

It would be of course totally appropriate for the e-communications to be pasted into the local detailed records as part of our medico-legal requirement for complete records.
