Letters, calls and emails: On-call qualifications would prevent tragedy

Dear Editor

I am sorry to note that a young patient died due to a failure to diagnose a fatal condition over the telephone (GP, 1 June).

The system needs to change, because we have doctors from different specialties on call.

GPs doing out-of-hours are under enormous pressure and mistakes are bound to be made.

There should be a different accreditation for doctors doing out-of-hours.

One needs to be in frequent contact with emergency cases to have full confidence in dealing with them.

Dr Sivaram Devaraj, Twickenham, Middlesex.
