Letters, calls & emails: Mental Health Act Bill has no hidden agenda

Dear Editor

I disagree with Dr Andrew Lee's concerns about the new Mental Health Act Bill (GP, 8 June).

The government might want to detain terrorists, but I doubt doctors would want to be involved. Even if two doctors could be found who were willing to complete section papers on a non-mentally-ill terrorist, where do you think you would find an approved social worker willing to condone their actions?

What is needed is more clarity and modernity than the existing legislation, which, by the way, is equally amenable to abuse if you can find people willing to go counter to the guidelines that accompany it.

Dr David Church, section-12-approved GP, Machynlleth, Powys.
