Letters: Beware of Portuguese directory scam cost

Can I warn other doctors of a letter being sent to practices that may lead to a claim against them?

A company is asking doctors to check their details are correct for a register known as the Physicians and Therapists Guide. The letter comes from a company called United Lda.

By signing the form, a practice is also agreeing to an advertisement to be placed, which costs EUR957. This figure is in the text and can be easily missed.

This scheme seems to be remarkably similar to one already highlighted by GP, which was criticised for the way it aims to make money from unsuspecting doctors.

Dr Jeremy Phipps, Market Deeping, Lincolnshire

  • GP contacted Portugal-based United Lda by telephone and email at its Lisbon offices offering it a right to reply but it chose not to respond.
