Letter: Tax relief on premiums for locum policies

Dear Editor

I am writing in relation to Dr Bill Spiegler's letter concerning locum insurance in which he stated that the tax relief on premiums for such policies were tax deductible (GP, 10 February).

This is indeed true for genuine locum policies where the policy states that any benefits are conditional upon them being spent on a locum or on other specified practice expenses.

However, it must not be overlooked that benefits from such locum policies are taxable unlike permanent health insurance pay-outs which are tax free.
