Letter: Maternity leave cuts deter women GPs

Dear Editor

We are a large mid-Wales practice and our local heath board Powys has withdrawn all maternity leave payments as far as we can see.

Even for a large practice, this amounts to a pay cut of nearly £10,000 each - if you were a small practice it would be impossible and would amount to huge discrimination.

It will deter women from entering or re-entering practice.

With the medical schools running at about 70/30 in favour of women, this situation can only get worse.

This will increasingly affect decisions on partnership and employment - itself a form of discrimination.

Dr Christopher Nevill, Newtown Powys.
