Johnson blasts PCTs over polyclinics

Health secretary Alan Johnson has hit out at PCTs which blame the government for their own failure to tackle health inequalities.

Geraldine Smith, Labour MP for Morecambe, said that GPs in her constituency were concerned that plans for new practices in under-doctored areas would destabilise existing practices.

The PCT ‘says it would like to do it another way, but the government will not allow it to do so’, she added.

But Mr Johnson said that the PCT's attitude was ‘disgraceful’, and accused trusts of ‘trying to duck this issue by blaming the government’.

Attempts to tackle under-doctored areas through extra investment in existing practices have failed, he said.

‘If that was just a matter of handing over the money to the BMA, which is what its political representatives on the opposition benches argue for, it would have been resolved years ago,’ he said.
