Official workforce data from the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) revealed a 1.7% rise in full-time equivalent GP numbers this week, but the figures also show wider changes in the profession.

Data from the HSCIC reveal significant changes in practice size and the make-up of the GP workforce, with huge growth in salaried GP numbers since the new GP contract took effect in 2004.

GPC leaders have questioned the accuracy of workforce data and warned that rising GP numbers are not keeping pace with patient demand.
