A guide to ophthalmology

BOOK

Ophthalmology in Primary Care

Dr Amar Alwitry, ISBN 9780850843040. Price £24.95

GPs do not need to know the complexities of ophthalmology, but do need to learn to treat ophthalmology patients in the context of a busy practice.

This book, published by the RCGP, is written by a specialist registrar in ophthalmology and was developed with the help of 10 GPs and provides user-friendly ophthalmic knowledge tailored to primary care. The book also contains sections on how to deal with further problems that may arise.

The book is divided into two parts. Part one looks at many of the eye conditions seen and dealt with in everyday practice and gives GPs the opportunity to make a difference in the holistic management of a patient by addressing associated systemic conditions.

Part two explains key knowledge in ophthalmology. It considers examination technique and basic sciences, as well as clinical management from a different perspective.

This section is suitable for doctors in training aiming to achieve a baseline knowledge of ophthalmology for exams and assessments.

Another highlight is the colour photography that illustrates the book throughout.
