GPC members have elected Dr Laurence Buckman as their new chairman, and negotiator Dr Richard Vautrey has been in-stalled as his deputy.

Dr Buckman’s election vacated a GPC negotiating seat, and Stanmore, London GP Dr Chaand Nagpaul has been elected to fill it.

Dr Buckman has been a GPC negotiator for a decade, and had been acting GPC chairman since Dr Hamish Meldrum was elected BMA chairman last month.

In his election manifesto, Dr Buckman pledged to reinstate a sense of hope in the profession and ‘inspire GPs to move on from a very low point’.

He promised a more robust approach to negotiations with the government and to counter its ‘misuse of the media’ with honesty about GPs. He will ‘refuse to allow GPs to be portrayed as the villains of the NHS’.
