GPC advises caution on commissioning

Practices should be 'aware of the arrangements pertaining to and implications arising from their involvement in commissioning at any level', the GPC has warned in guidance on the practice-based commissioning directed enhanced service (DES).

But the GPC stopped short of warning practices not to sign up for the DES, despite its decision not to recommend it to the profession.

It criticised the lack of information for LMCs in the DoH's guidance on the commissioning scheme, and provided guidance of its own about their role.

It said LMCs should ensure fair implementation of the DES across their area and protect existing agreements from being undermined by the DES.

The guidance also included a simple practice plan for which GPs receive 50 per cent of the available DES money.
