GMC registration ruled out for medical students

The GMC has ruled out plans to put medical students on performers lists, and will instead increase education and monitoring.

Ahead of this week’s GMC council meeting in Northern Ireland, GMC president Sir Graeme Catto said GMC members would visit medical schools to carry out education and monitoring.

‘How we engage with students and make them aware of how they are required to go about their work has been an issue for years,’ Sir Graeme said. ‘One proposal was that we should consider registering them and there are lots of pros and cons to doing so. But we have decided not to.

‘We intend to visit them much more regularly from day one. Last year we had a very successful road show and we intend to continue with that project as well.

‘Many students would like to be registered, but we think we can engage them without a register.’
