Four patients die each day in mental health trusts

The Lib Dems are demanding a government investigation after they found that almost four patients a day died following safety incidents in mental health trusts.

Their figures show that over 1,200 patients a year die in incidents ranging from self-harming, accidents, aggressive behaviour, medication errors, lost records or misidentification of patients.

Norman Lamb, shadow Liberal Democrat health secretary, said: ‘Behind these shocking figures lie many tales of personal tragedy. It is right that these statistics should be published but now the focus must be on how they can be reduced.

‘While patients in the mental health sector are more vulnerable to self-harm, questions must be raised about whether enough is being done to ensure their safety.

‘I shall be writing to the health secretary to ask for these figures to be thoroughly investigated to establish whether any steps can be taken to improve this deeply saddening situation.’
