A DoH spokeswoman confirmed that Professor Field will be chairing the new ‘NHS Future Forum’, which will review the Health Bill before it restarts progress through Parliament.

Professor Field currently chairs the DoH stakeholder board that brings together leading GPs. He has previously said that ‘working and talking through the issues of the Health Bill is far better than standing up and threatening’ (GP 11 March).

The launch of the panel follows an announcement earlier this week from the health secretary Andrew Lansley that the government will listen and engage with GPs and patients about its reforms and amend the Health Bill.

GP leaders have criticised the government's move to hold a listening exercise. They urged the government to act on the concerns of the profession and not just listen.

A DoH announcement about the NHS Future Forum panel and who will be chairing the group is expected later today.
