The government's Committee on the Medical Aspects of Radiation in the Environment (COMARE) said it is concerned about the growing use of sunbeds by under-18s and the rise in rates of skin cancer across the UK.

The committee also called for training for staff and all sunbed operators to be legally registered, licensed and inspected by local authorities.

Sarah Woolnough, head of policy at Cancer Research UK, said: ‘We are delighted that our call for legislation on sunbeds is being backed by this influential radiation committee.

‘The COMARE report clearly shows there are no health benefits from using sunbeds recreationally and we hope sunbed retailers who do advertise sunbeds as healthy will take note of the recommendations and stop immediately.’
