Darzi is only obeying the orders of his paymasters

The Romans used to kill messengers who brought bad news.

So much has been written about polyclinics and Lord Darzi but blaming him is missing the point: he is just the spokesman for his political masters.

The word 'Darzi' in Urdu means 'tailor', so maybe he has stitched us all up. It is not for me to defend him, but I have it on good authority (from a former adviser to Mrs Thatcher) that prime ministers consider the NHS to be a jewel in the crown (as did Blair and even Thatcher). If Mr Brown wishes to leave his mark on the NHS, how can demanding the resignation of Lord Darzi be 'fair'?

Shooting the messenger never brought the Romans any luck.
