Darzi blog refutes claim all practices to be forced into polyclinics

Health minister Lord Darzi has denied claims that all GP practices will be forced to relocate to polyclinics.

Writing on his blog about his NHS review, he notes that: ‘Some people have recently claimed that the review aims to drive primary care in this country solely into polyclinics. Let me emphasise that this is not the case.'

He re-stated plans to create 100 new GP practices and 152 GP-led health centres. But he added that further reorganisations ‘will be entirely a matter for local discretion, based on local need. PCTs, not ministers, will decide locally how far to bring services together'.

Lord Darzi also hinted at greater funding for GP services.

‘Most GPs, practice nurses and other healthcare staff already provide an excellent service in the community. The question for us is how do we build on this,' he wrote.

‘In my opinion, only heavy investment in primary care services can enable our clinicians to provide increased levels of care in the community.'
