People who are overweight or obese are being offered a free weight loss programme.
The new community pharmacy weight loss programme – which gives people confidential advice and support on how to make healthy lifestyle changes to help lose weight – has been launched by the North East Essex PCT and starts from the 8th January at selected pharmacies.
People taking part in the programme will be seen on an individual basis in a private consulting area and will be given information on nutrition, lifestyle and physical activity.
At each session participants will have their weight, Body Mass Index (BMI) and blood pressure taken. The programme runs for 12 weeks and participants will be seen on four occasions at one, four, eight and 12 weeks.
Community Pharmacist Simon Moul said: “The participating pharmacists – four in Colchester and four in Tendring – are very excited about this new scheme.
“We are ideally placed to help people with health advice and support, particularly as we can do it from locations convenient to the public.
“ We will be encouraging people to look at what, where and how much they eat, as well as getting more physically active and that doesn’t necessarily mean in a gym, it could be walking, dancing – something the person will enjoy and suits them.”
Trust health promotion co-ordinator Mel Idroos said: “Those taking part must be motivated and committed to making lifestyle changes and they will be supported in losing 5% to 10% of their body weight.
“Just by making small changes to eating habits and getting more active, you can make a big difference to your weight and well being. People don’t realise that being over weight can put your health at risk and, at worse, it can lead to life threatening conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, joint problems and some cancers.”
