More convenient testing for people with diabetes New BREEZE®2 blood glucose monitoring system launched in the UK

London, 10 September 2007 - The new BREEZE®2 blood glucose monitoring system, from Bayer HealthCare, Diabetes Care, is launched today.

London, 10 September 2007 - The new BREEZE®2 blood glucose monitoring system, from Bayer HealthCare, Diabetes Care, is launched today.  The product, which boasts key features including No Coding™ Technology and a 10 test disc system, has been developed to help improve the accuracy, speed and convenience of testing for people with diabetes and so increase their motivation to self-manage their condition.

Using the latest No Coding ™ technology, BREEZE®2 aims to increase patients’ confidence that results reflect true blood glucose levels. Research1 suggests that miscoding is common with manually calibrated meters and can lead to significant errors in insulin dose in patients actively managing their diabetes.  For example, the probability of making an insulin dose error of 3 units is 24% for miscoded meters, compared to 0.49% when using a no coding meter2.

In addition to No Coding™ Technology, the new Breeze®2 has a number of features to ensure that testing is fast and hassle-free, giving patients more freedom to enjoy their every day lives. Key benefits include:
Ø The handy Breeze®2 disc means that the meter only needs to be loaded once for 10 tests.  So, there is no need to carry or load individual testing strips, making the meter ideal for patients who test on the go.
Ø The new Breeze®2 gives test results in just five seconds and only a small blood sample(1μL) is required
Ø The meter has a streamlined shape that fits easily in the hand and has a straightforward ‘push and pull’ step to test for ease of use.

The BREEZE®2 meter also includes a 420-test memory which means that people with diabetes can keep track of their blood glucose over longer periods and while on the move.  People with diabetes can easily review 1-day, 7-day, 14-day and 30-day averages and data from the meter can be downloaded to a computer and analysed with a free software package, WinGlucofacts – available free of charge from Bayer HealthCare, Diabetes Care.

Jo Head, Lead Diabetes Specialist Nurse from Royal Hampshire County Hospital, Winchester comments:

“Breeze®2 is an easy-to-handle system, with an innovative10 test strip disc system and No Coding™ Technology that offers real benefits to people with diabetes.  People will be able to test their blood glucose levels more conveniently, quickly and with confidence that the results are accurate.  When patients are actively involved in managing their condition, are motivated to test and able to adjust their therapy, it's good news for their long term health.  When they can test quickly and conveniently, it is great news for their every day lives as well.”

People who are interested in using the new BREEZE®2 should contact their diabetes nurse for more information or call Bayer Diabetes Support on 0845 600 6030 (UK) or 1 890 920 111 (Ireland).
