Commissioning in chaos as DoH withdraws tariffs

GPs gearing up for practice-based commissioning in England and PCTs budgeting for the year ahead have had their financial planning thrown into disarray by the abrupt withdrawal of the Payment by Results tariffs for 2006/7.

The tariffs, published on 31 January, were withdrawn three weeks later after 'underlying errors' in the original calculations were brought to the attention of the DoH.

With three weeks to go before the start of the new financial year, the DoH was unable to provide a date for when the corrected tariffs would be available.

This has caused particular difficulties for PCTs in the red.
