Classical CD of the month

Gramophone reviewer, Alan Blyth, says of the recording: ‘Any veteran like me who might be getting a bit supercilious about the merits of early Verdi will have those weary thoughts cast aside by this splendidly honest and virile recording

Name Nabucco

Composer Giuseppe Verdi

Artist Alan Opie (baritone)

Label Chandos, Opera in English

Opera in English is here justified by virtue of an excellent cast who let us hear every word of the old, trusted translation by Norman Tucker and Tom Hammond, pioneers of giving works in the vernacular.’

James Inverne adds: ‘At last, British baritone Alan Opie confirms that he is one of the few truly great Verdi baritones of his generation. Alongside him, Susan Patterson reaches grand, characterful heights as Abigail, while Alastair Miles is a granite-voiced Zachariah. Under David Parry’s superb conducting, the whole set reeks of theatricality, verve and true Verdian style. My only reservation? This is one of those early Verdi operas that sounds a bit like Gilbert and Sullivan in English.’

James Inverne is editor of Gramophone. A full review is published in the January issue
