The consultation for the QOF 2012/13 includes proposals for 29 new indicators and will run until 28 March.

Among the proposed indicators are plans for several public health-orientated measures, which will align the QOF with the coalition’s focus on population health outcomes.

These will cover clinical areas of asthma, peripheral artery disease, smoking, atrial fibrillation, diabetes, primary prevention of CVD, osteoporosis, physical activity and obesity.

From 2013, at least 15% of QOF funding will be assigned to public health and primary prevention indicators, the government outlined in its White Paper in December last year.

Feedback from the consultation, together with results from the piloting process, will be presented to the independent QOF advisory committee to consider.

The committee will then recommend which indicators should be considered for inclusion in the QOF. A ‘menu’ of these approved indicators will be published in summer 2011.

Dr Fergus Macbeth, director of the centre for clinical practice at NICE, said the consultation was an important part of NICE’s transparency. He encouraged all stakeholders to take part and share their views.
