Care Quality Commission makes first appointments

The first three commissioners have been appointed to the Shadow Care Quality Commission.

They are Professor Deirdre Kelly, professor of paediatric hepatology at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, Lord Patel of Bradford, chairman of the Mental Health Act Commission, and Dame Jo Williams, chief executive of the Royal Mencap Society.

The Care Quality Commission was established by the Health and Social Care Act 2008 to regulate the quality of health and social care and look after the interests of people detained under the Mental Health Act.

It will bring together the Commission for Social Care Inspection, the Healthcare Commission and the Mental Health Act Commission. The Care Quality Commission becomes a legal entity next month and takes up its responsibilities in April 2009.
