Baroness Thornton replaces Lord Darzi at DoH

Baroness Glenys Thornton has been unveiled by the DoH as the new health minister, filling the gap created by the resignation of Lord Darzi last summer.

The baroness has been the government whip in the House of Lords and the government spokesperson for health, education and equality.

She acted as Lord Darzi's number two on parliamentary matters in the Lords and worked on the last two health bills.

She was appointed to the House of Lords in July 1998 and was an active backbench member before joining the whip's office in 2008.

The mother-of-two has particularly championed children's issues throughout this period, including working on children's acts, the Children Leaving Care Act and the Sexual Offences Act to ensure that the legislation protected children online.
