Astra Tech has announced it is continuing its support for The Back-Up Trust, to provide wheelchair skills training sessions in spinal centres throughout the UK.

The 2007 programme will cover thirty five sessions at all eleven spinal centres.  Astra Tech will also be supporting the recruitment of new volunteer trainers, through a programme of training weekends.

The Back-Up Trust is a national charity supporting people whose lives have been changed by a traumatic injury, which has resulted in a spinal cord injury.  It organises the wheelchair skills training sessions to teach people relevant skills for everyday life, to enable them to become more independent and lead a more active life.  Back-Up sessions offer an opportunity for inpatients and outpatients to learn on a peer-to-peer basis from long term wheelchair users.  Participants have a chance to learn basic skills, like back wheel balancing, as well as more advanced techniques for tackling thresholds, ramps and stairs.

Astra Tech has linked up with The Back-Up Trust as it produces a range of catheters for carrying out Intermittent Self Catheterisation (ISC).  People with spinal injuries may need to carry out ISC, as a spinal cord injury results in a loss of control and function of the bladder.

Astra Tech’s LoFricÒ Hydro-Kit™ II provides a complete catheter kit that can be opened, used and disposed of in a number of ways. LoFric Hydro-Kit II is a small, flexible and discreet catheter kit, which comes pre-folded and, as it can be used anywhere, gives complete freedom. It is particularly suitable for people with spinal injuries, as it is ideal for use in situations where it is difficult for people to get out of a wheelchair to use the toilet or when there is no toilet available.

LoFricÒ Hydro-Kit™ II includes a 1000ml urine drainage bag, suitable for day and night time use, an integrated water sachet, so people don’t need to worry about the availability or quality of water, and a handling aid to allow a non-touch technique.

In 2006, Astra Tech received a British Healthcare Trades Association award for its LoFricÒ Hydro-Kit™ II catheter. This award recognises innovative products that assist independent living.
