Alan Johnson appointed home secretary in cabinet reshuffle

Health secretary Alan Johnson was today appointed home secretary to replace Jacqui Smith in a cabinet reshuffle.

Alistair Darling will stay in his job as chancellor and Jack Straw will remain justice secretary.

The reshuffle is seen as make or break for Gordon Brown as today’s news agenda is dominated by the resignation of James Purnell, the work and pensions secretary.
