Letter: Revalidation not reason for loss of doctors

The assertion that 4.5 per cent of the 'active workforce' will be lost once revalidation is implemented misrepresents the situation (Healthcare Republic, 11 December).
For most doctors, revalidation will be straightforward. While 10,000 doctors may choose to give up their licence, this is not because they are 'revalidation shy' - they are doctors who are not in active practice in the UK so will not need to hold a licence to practise or revalidate.
Just over 2 per cent of all registered doctors who hold a licence to practise undertake no clinical practice. A further 4.5 per cent undertake their clinical practice outside the UK. These doctors are not part of the 'active workforce', so it follows that they may choose to relinquish their licence to practise during 2010.
