Parkinson's link to melanoma

Melanomas are considerably more common in people with Parkinson's disease, according to US research.
Researchers from the University of Nebraska examined melanoma prevalence rates and risk factors in 2,106 patients with Parkinson's disease.
Among the 1,692 patients there was a 124 per cent increased incidence of malignant melanomas compared with the general population.
These patients were also at seven times greater risk of any melanomas, compared with prevalence data from a US epidemiologic survey of cancer.
The authors said: 'A prevalence of greater than 1 per cent warrants increased vigilance and regular screening for melanoma in Parkinson's disease patients.'
