Unite defeats social enterprise plans in London

By Neil Durham, 08 March 2010

NHS Tower Hamlets has withdrawn plans to hive off NHS services into a social enterprise following staff protests, according to Unite/CPHVA.

The union says the trust's project board informed a staff meeting that it would be approaching the London SHA and DoH to request that the trust remains a direct provider for the next two years.

Karen Reay, Unite national officer for health, said: ‘This is a victory for common sense and a tribute to the staff's united opposition to breaking up the provision of NHS services. We now wish to work constructively with the management to ensure that NHS-provided services continue to meet the health needs of the ethnically diverse population.'

NHS Tower Hamlets was unavailable for comment.
