NHS Appraisal site back online after security fix

By Stephen Robinson, 05 March 2010

GPs can now access the NHS Appraisal toolkit website again after more than three weeks' downtime to address security concerns.

The website was shut on 9 February to fix loopholes in security that made the site vulnerable to hackers. It was reopened on Thursday after the DoH announced it was satisfied with the revised security.

‘Further security checks have been undertaken and we have shared our findings with an expert panel including members nominated by the BMA and the RCGP,' the DoH said.

‘Ministers, advised by the expert panel, are now satisfied that the toolkit can safely be restored online.'

The DoH said the site's security would continue to be reviewed quarterly, in line with the government's data handling review.

About 15,000 doctors, predominantly GPs, were expected to have completed appraisals before the appraisal deadline at end of March.
