COPD strategy focuses on identication and self-management
By Tom Moberly, 24 February 2010
Earlier identification and improved self-management form the basis of the COPD strategy for England, launched in draft form by the DoH.
In launching the strategy Mr Burnham said that early diagnosis would help with management of COPD
The strategy will lead efforts to diagnose over two million unrecognised cases of the disease, the government says.
New funding will not be made available to fund the strategy. Instead, PCTs will be expected to ‘re-prioritise' resources and make efficiency savings.
Comments on the strategy can be made via the DoH website until 5 April.
Launching the strategy, health secretary Andy Burnham said that, although COPD was hard to spot in its early stages, the sooner it is diagnosed the more we can do for people with the condition.
‘This strategy will focus minds across the NHS on better diagnosis and earlier treatment,' he said. ‘There are more than three million people with COPD in this country, yet less than a million have been diagnosed, so we need to raise awareness and improve knowledge of the symptoms as a matter of urgency.'
