Professor Pringle's video is one of a series of webcasts that appear on the college's website, explaining its latest guidance.

He admits in the video, recorded to mark the issue of the third version of the RCGP's guidance last month, that: ‘In this fluid environment nothing is absolutely for certain until we get up to the introduction of revalidation itself.'

But he adds that because the GMC has now approved RCGP proposals for how doctors supply supporting information for revalidation, ‘we can now have more confidence what we are talking about is actually going to happen'.

The series of RCGP webcasts is introduced by a film message from RCGP chairman, Professor Steve Field.

Professor Steve Field said: ‘We must get into the mindset of seeing revalidation as professional development, making sure that revalidation uses existing systems and that it is not onerous for GPs.'
