Scottish government should support new GP practices, say GP leaders

The Scottish government should introduce measures to support the development of new GP practices in growing communities, according to GP leaders.
Dr Marshall: Include the creation of new GP practices as part of the planning process
BMA Scotland and RCGP Scotland called for the government to introduce measures to ensure that town planners consider the impact of new housing developments on local health services.
Scotland's population is expected to rise by 7% by 2033, and BMA Scotland says this coupled with the associated housing developments will 'put pressure' on existing general practices.
It therefore also suggests that support should be provided to GPs for the creation of new practices where there is significant population growth.
Dr Dean Marshall, chairman of GPC Scotland, said it would be ‘common sense' to include this as part of the planning process.
He said: ‘General practice is very much at the heart of local communities and the care we provide is valued by our patients.
‘At present there is no requirement for planning departments to consider the impact of new housing developments on local health services.'
