Closed-loop insulin systems 'reduce hypoglycaemia'

Closed-loop insulin delivery systems can reduce night-time hypoglycaemia in children and adolescents with type-1 diabetes, research published in The Lancet suggests.
Researchers from Addenbroke's Hospital, Cambridge, examined the use of continuous glucose monitoring in combination with insulin pumps (dubbed ‘artificial pancreas' systems).
They measured blood glucose levels over 54 nights in 17 children and teenagers with type-1 diabetes aged 5-18 years.
The study included nights after large meals and after exercise, both of which can be challenging to manage.
Participants using closed-loop systems maintained blood glucose levels in the normal range 60% of the time, compared with 40% for those using standard insulin pumps.
