GP to lead DoH productivity bid

The quality of primary care must become more consistent, a GP appointed as one of five DoH 'quality advisers' has told GP.
Sir John Oldham has been appointed to drive up NHS productivity for the DoH. Sir John will focus on driving efficiency in the treatment of long-term conditions and urgent care.
He had yet to identify areas of inefficiency to target, but he said primary care quality needs to be more consistent.
'There is a percentage of GPs that drag the rest of us down and that should not be accepted any more,' he said.
The way GPs treat long-term conditions must also become more efficient as the proportion of older people in the popula-tion grows, he said.
Sir John has also worked for advisory bodies including the National Primary Care Development Team.
