RCGP wants deaneries and PCOs to pay for remediation

05 February 2010

The cost of remediation for GPs who fail revalidation should be shared by their primary care organisation (PCO) and the local deanery, the RCGP has said.

The recommendation is included in an RCGP policy paper that looks at how to provide the resources needed to deliver a system of remediation that is 'value for money'.

However, the document also suggests that over the next few years remediation could place an extra burden on PCOs and deaneries, and calls for the DoH to 'allocate specific additional funds' to pay for effective remediation.

The RCGP's recommendation addresses previous concerns that GPs could have to foot the bill for remediation.

A DoH spokeswoman said the department's Remediation Steering Group will 'over the next few months' look at the cost implications of how to effectively deliver remediation to doctors.

Professor Steve Field, RCGP chairman, said the college's proposals need to be 'adapted to local circumstances', and also suggested additional resources would be needed to guarantee the programme's success.

He said: 'Sorting out a fair system for remediation is essential for the individual GPs concerned, and for the service generally. We want to ensure patients receive the highest quality care from their GPs and that GPs are provided with appropriate support in order to deliver that care.'

GPC chairman Dr Laurence Buckman said: 'Remediation is an expensive and time consuming activity and it is vital that all doctors who go through the process are treated equally and are properly supported.'

RCGP demands

  • DoH to allocate 'specific additional funds' to pay for remediation.
  • PCOs and deaneries should share the costs.
  • Proposals to be adapted to fit local circumstances.
  • Additional resources to guarantee success.
