The recommendation is included in an RCGP policy paper that looks at how to provide the resources needed to deliver a system of remediation that is ‘value for money'.

The RCGP's recommendation addresses previous concerns that GPs could have to foot the bill for remediation.

However, it also suggests that over the next few years remediation could place an extra burden on PCOs and deanaries, and therefore calls for the DoH to ‘allocate specific additional funds' to ensure there are sufficient resources to allow for effective remediation.

Professor Steve Field, RCGP chairman, said the college's proposals will need to be ‘adapted to local circumstances', and also suggested additional resources would be needed to guarantee the programme's success.

He said: 'The RCGP is aware of the wide variation in the way that GPs are supported through remediation across the UK.

‘Sorting out a fair system for remediation is essential for the individual GPs concerned, and for the service generally. We want to ensure patients receive the highest quality care from their GPs and that GPs are provided with appropriate support in order to deliver the care that patients deserve.'

Dr Laurence Buckman, chairman of the GPC said: ‘Remediation is an expensive and time consuming activity and it is essential that all doctors who go through the process are treated equally and are properly supported.'
