EU law and foreign doctors putting patients at risk, says report

The GMC is to look into how the competence of foreign GPs can be more accurately assessed, following the recommendation of a report.
Report finds variation in doctors training is endangering patients
Lord Patel's report on the regulation of medical education recommends the GMC address the 'significant variation' in training across EU countries.
Currently all EU member states must recognise doctors as long as they meet minimum standards set by EU law.
The reports author, Lord Patel, says these 'shortcomings in legislation' are preventing the GMC from effectively protecting patients. The lack of equivalent training has lowered confidence in the specialist and GP registers, he concludes.
The subject of EU doctors working in the UK has been in the spotlight recently after German locum Dr Daniel Ubani administered a fatal overdose on his first shift in the UK.
A review of the quality of out-of-hours care, led by DoH director of primary care Dr David Colin-Thomé and RCGP chairman Professor Steve Field, is due to report soon.
