DoH sets up care home drug plan

The DoH has called for PCTs to work with GPs, pharmacists and social care providers to determine how medication errors in residential care homes for elderly people can be reduced.
The DoH called for PCTs to review the 'safety of local prescribing, dispensing, administration and monitoring arrangements in the provision of medication to older people'.
It cited evidence from a government-funded report, published last year, that suggested on any one day seven out of 10 patients in care homes suffer at least one medication error.
GPC negotiator Dr Chaand Nagpaul said: 'The administration of medication is the responsibility of staff in care homes and GPs cannot be held responsible.
'Care homes must ensure staff are given the proper training and are able and competent enough to administer prescribed medications.'
