GP surgeries to pilot predictive cancer risk software
By Tom Moberly, 04 January 2010
Software that calculates patients' risk of developing cancer is to be piloted in GP surgeries this spring.
The new computer-assisted tool will assess patients' chance of developing cancer
Exeter GP Dr Willie Hamilton is working on a diagnostic risk assessment tool to assist earlier diagnosis of lung and bowel cancers for use in primary care.
The tool is be piloted in a cohort on GP practices, with trials planned to begin in the spring.
A DoH spokesman said that the assessment would work in a similar way to assessments of cardiovascular risk.
Factors such as age, weight and symptoms such as sudden weight loss or bleeding would be used to assess patients' chance of developing cancer.
In an interview with The Guardian last week, Professor Mike Richards, the national cancer director for England, said he hoped the tool would be available in all GP surgeries within five years.
