Practice-based commissioning groups struggle to access savings

Nearly two-thirds (62%) of local practice-based commissioning (PBC) groups have not received any of their savings to reinvest in services, a DoH survey reveals.

DoH guidance states that GPs should be allowed to access at least 70% of any savings they make to reinvest in services.
The DoH has abandoned its quarterly survey of random GPs and has begun surveying local PBC leads instead.
Data from the latest survey reveals that ‘62% of PBC leads have not been given a proportion of their freed up resources to reinvest.
‘Of those who have, the average amount made available by the PCT is 60%.'
The survey, based on the responses of 466 PBC group and independent practice leads, found that just over half (54%) feel PBC has influenced the clinical practice of the GP practices within their group.
