GPC and RCGP commit to improve general practice quality

The GPC and RCGP have joined forces and committed to improve the quality of general practice in the UK.

RCGP chairman Professor Steve Field said the profession should ‘no longer tolerate poor practice' and promote itself rather than be told what to do by government.
The college's practice accreditation could ‘stop PCTs asking for different things in different areas' and demonstrate to government that UK general practice was the best in the world, he said.
GPC chairman Dr Laurence Buckman said that the definition of quality was different to patients, doctors, the NHS and government, but the profession should always strive to improve.
The two chairmen took to the stage together at the BMA's conference on Quality in Modern General Practice in London on Friday as a ‘powerful sign that we are united in this goal.'
GP leaders were gathered at London's BMA House to discuss how the profession should prepare for Care Quality Commission regulation in 2012 and increasing PCT scrutiny.
