NICE consults on dementia and stroke advice
By Tom Moberly, 01 December 2009
Definitions of what high-quality dementia and stroke care should involve have been published in draft form by NICE.
These standards will offer a ‘benchmark' to inform assessments by the Care Quality Commission and other bodies.
NICE is calling for comments from healthcare professionals with experience in the treatment of dementia and stroke.
NICE implementation director Val Moore said: ‘Once published the NICE quality standards will provide the NHS and the public with a clear aspiration, which can be used to assess existing performance and inform future service improvements.'
She added: ‘Our focus has been to distil from relevant NICE guidance and other accredited sources of guidance a list of the main statements that reflect a high quality service in a way that is relevant to patients, professionals, service providers and commissioners.'
In a statement NICE said that, although the standards differed from CQC registration requirements, they were likely to inform the CQC wider regulatory activities.
The two quality standards are available on the NICE website and are open for comments until 15 January 2010.
Similar documents on venous thromboembolism and neonatal care are due to published as drafts in early 2010.
