GMC licence in place next week
By Nick Bostock, 13 November 2009
More than 200,000 UK doctors will have their GMC registration updated to show they now hold a licence to practice from 16 November.
Some 200,000 doctors replied to a GMC consultation to request a license, while 13,500 replied to ask to remain registered without a licence.
Just over 6,000 doctors who failed to respond will also be licensed from Monday.
Doctors will not receive an additional number when they receive their licences, the GMC has pointed out.
Current GMC registration numbers will remain a 'unique identifier' - anyone wishing to check whether a doctor is licensed should use their registration number to check their status with the GMC.
Doctors should use their seven-digit GMC number on forms such as medical certificates of cause of death, which may now require this information.
