GPs need 50% swine flu jab rate for extra pay

Over half of at-risk patients will need to be vaccinated against swine flu for GPs to qualify for payments beyond the basic £5.25 per jab.

Details of requirements associated with the swine flu vaccination directed enhanced service were published earlier this week and came into force on Friday.
The directions reveal that GPs will need to achieve a vaccination rate of 50.7% among at-risk groups to have their PE7 and PE8 payment thresholds reduced and gain extra payments.
However, the DoH and BMA said in guidance on the service that GPs should aim for higher achievement. ‘Whilst a target of 50.7% has been set, we hope that GPs will seek to achieve a swine flu vaccination uptake at least equal to or better than that achieved by the practice for seasonal flu in 2008/9,' the guidance said.
