Patients want greater email contact with GPs
By Neil Durham, 16 October 2009
Almost two-thirds of UK patients (64%) would like to receive a diagnosis from their GP by email, according to a survey by a market research company.
Firm Lightspeed Research quizzed 1,000 patients and found that just over a third would like to consult their GP via an online chat.
A total of 65% cited less time waiting for an appointment as being an advantage, with 62% saying that virtual appointments would save time on travel and booking.
More than 89% scour the internet for health advice before contacting their GP.
The survey found that 14% can contact their GP by email.
David Day, global chief executive officer of Lightspeed, said: ‘These results make it clear that patients want to move beyond the doctor's surgery and embrace new technology as a means to communicate and interact with their GP.'
